appearance

Jehan is of a very small stature, standing at only 4’11”. They’ve got a fairly willowy figure with their current glamour. There are lots of freckles covering their body, though it’s mostly on their face, neck, arms, and shoulders. Their hair is a bright red, and it can vary in length and shade depending on how they want their glamour to look. Their eyes are silver, and they very clearly show weariness and age that doesn’t match the age of their physical age. Nothing about them screams “fae” as they simply look like a human. They dress like they picked their clothes in the dark. It’s all lovely and well taken care of, but they don’t match things at all. Under their glamour, they retain their figure and eyes, but the skin on their forearms, hands, calves, and feet is more like the living bark of a black cherry tree. It shifts and moves easily with their body, but otherwise, they have milky skin with almost sparkling freckles. Their hair is like fire itself. It goes down to the middle of their back, and it glows and licks like a flame without the burn. They have scars on their wrists and ankles that look almost like shackles, an “M” carved into the front of their right shoulder, a scar from a gunshot wound in the back of their knee, and scarring under their hair from a shot to the head. Jehan has two stubs where wings should have been, and they're very sensitive. They have a “spark” that keeps them looking in such a way, and if it “dies” (which can happen due to extreme emotional strain or loss), there can be severe consequences. Sometimes it’s barely a dimming of the light, and they’ll return to normal in a few hours or days depending on the severity. If they go completely out, it can become disastrous. Their bark skin can peel or rot, and their hair turns flat and as dark as coal. It can even leave coal dust. Their eyes become blackened, and it can cover not only their irises, but the whites of their eyes as well. It’s a horrific sight to behold, as they become almost wraith-like.

history

Jehan was born to Erid, a high fae, and to Micha, a lesser fae, on August 24th, 1813. They were an illegitimate child, and the product of a minor affair during Erid’s engagement to the king of Jehan’s own court: the Ember Keep. They were raised in secret by a nursemaid for about three years before Erid had had enough. She dropped Jehan in the woods in the French countryside. It was the middle of early winter, and the small child was at the mercy of the outdoors. They wandered around for a while before they grew to be tired and hungry. When they called for help, no one came. They just sat on the ground, crying for hours. Eventually, they fell asleep. As they were resting, they were discovered by a party of hunters. It was being led by a noble who was on holiday with his wife. After taking them in and warming them up, the noble decided to ask around the village their winter home was near to see if anyone had lost a child. When they found that no one was laying claim to them, Clément and Octavia Ambroise adopted the baby who they then dubbed Jeanne Adeline Ambroise.

They grew up with the Ambroise noble family where they learned etiquette and received a fairly extensive education for a woman in the time period. After a traumatic event when they were seven that rendered them wingless and their powers severely limited, they threw themself further into their studies, even going so far as to find a tutor of a magical nature to instruct them on politics and philosophy as well as their own magical abilities. They even pursued revolution among the other Republicans in Paris. After participating in the July Revolution of 1830, several rebellions, and the February Revolution of 1848, that revolutionary fervor died down. This was when the hunting started.Over the course of about a century (1869 roughly 1965), they were pursued by far hunters on the regular. They usually stuck to the east coast, only going out west or even into Canada if they absolutely had to. They spent most of the end of the 19th century in a tent, but they did start taking up apartments or small rental properties. Nothing was too permanent until 1991, by that point, they’d found a small sea-side town in the northern continental United States. They’ve been living there ever since.

abilities:

Fire: Jehan can start fires by touching something with their hands or if they focus on something hard enough. It doesn’t burn or spread unless they want it to. They can also warm their hands to almost unbearable temperatures. They’re also fire-resistant, so they could sit in fire, play with it, or direct it elsewhere. As far as they know, these abilities have no effect on other people’s fire magic.Healing: They can heal themself and others. Smaller things are instantaneous and take little to no energy, whereas bigger things (e.g. deep stab wounds, gunshots, lost limbs, (near) fatal injuries) can take hours or days to heal and require large amounts of magic. They are susceptible to exhaustion and are more vulnerable than usual in these periods. If they’re not careful, they can accidentally give a receiver of their magic some of their life force. It is unknown what effect this would have on the recipient as it is unprecedented.Plant Magic: They can enhance the life of plants and their medicinal/magical properties through contact and intentional infusions of their own magic. They’re also able to draw up seeds from the earth and bend them to their will. Vines can also be summoned to trap an unsuspecting victim. They’re not indestructible, but they’re stronger than average plants. This magic is relatively new to them and requires much more energy and focus than their fire magic, as it has been dormant for most of their life. They can also use their own life force to grow plants, but if they infuse too much, destroying the plants may kill them.Shifting: Jehan can shift themself into a small mourning dove for extended periods of time. They may forcibly revert if subjected to extreme temperatures or if they push their body to the point of exhaustion.Glamour: They can alter their appearance or someone else’s. It’s simple magic and doesn’t require a lot of energy or thought. It holds as long as their magic does.Animal Communication: As long as they have physical contact (and permission from the animal itself) Jehan is able to communicate with animals. The thoughts are projected into their head and each animal has a unique voice.True Names: Utilizing the power of the names given to those at birth, they can control the name bearer. This can be used with intent (making the magic more powerful and much stronger to resist) or it can even happen unintentionally. The more parts of a name one uses, the stronger the magic.Long Lived: Jehan has a very long life span, and will live so long as they are not killed by another.

weaknesses:

Iron: As a fae, one of their biggest weaknesses is iron. It will burn them and the scars will never heal. Their healing can kick in, but it will heal at half the rate it usually does. If ingested, it can kill them in large doses or cause severe organ damage if they manage to survive. The tissue scarring could potentially become fatal.Fae Bane: Fae Bane is known but to very few, and is very difficult to make considering the rarity of fae. It is made of ground up bones of dead fae, and a mixture of herbs and chemicals. The recipe for this deadly poison has been passed down through generations of hunter families and has only been improved upon as time has passed. Even the smallest amounts that are inhaled can make Jehan feel sick. It is an unrelenting sickness that cannot be soothed by food, or rest, or medication. It causes fever, nausea, dizziness, seizures, and can severely cripple Jehan’s magical abilities. If they were to ingest more than a tablespoon, there is no cure. Jehan would die in a matter of hours. The only way to stop the sickness is if it is completely removed from the site (through extensive cleaning, vacuuming, usage of magic, etc.) The effects would linger for days as their body tried to expel the poison from their system.Physical Prowess: Jehan’s strength does not lie in their physicality. They’re very willowy, and are only 4’11”. They could easily be overpowered, captured, or killed by someone stronger than them.Heart: The subspecies of fae that Jehan belongs to is weak to physical damage to the heart, as it is where every ounce of their magic and life force are stored. They can be killed through direct, extreme damage.True Name: Just like how Jehan can use the true names of others, someone can also use their name against them. Under orders, their magic can be utilized and they can be forced to do or say things they would otherwise not do. They cannot be ordered to kill themself, however, and if given an order like ‘hold your breath’ they would simply hold it until they passed out and then start breathing again. If told to hang/drown/fatally wound themself, it will not take effect. They cannot be forced to confess something that they do not know, and they cannot be forced to do something outside of their physical capabilities (pick up things 3 times their weight, be on another continent in 5 minutes, etc.)Severe Injury: Despite all of their strengths and healing abilities, Jehan can be slowed due to severe trauma (eg. car crashes, hanging, drowning, severe blood loss, gunshot wounds, etc). They can be weakened significantly, but only fae-specific fatal materials and damage to their heart can truly kill them.

modern relations

ELIZABETH
(@GLASSF0UNDATI0N)
Dr. Elizabeth Schneider is a close friend of J’s turned lover. The founder of the Glass Foundation and quite literally a genius, Jehan is utterly entranced by her intelligence. They admire her strength and her impressive mind. She offered them a place in the Foundation as an English teacher, and they have cycled through many roles within the foundation since. As their relationship has deepened, Jehan has developed an immense loyalty toward her. They've long since discovered hefty pieces of truth regarding the nature of her research and have a twisted sort of fascination amidst all their concern. In recent years, their relationship has become slightly strained due to Schneider's shift in goals. It has led to a more distant, if still caring, relationship on Jehan's part.◈LILITH
(@HUNTEROFOCCULT)
Lilith is one of Jehan's close(-ish) friends. She is someone that Jehan knows that they should not be around, but they have come to care for her anyway. Though keeping their heritage a secret, Jehan and Lilith have found themself in an amiable, light-hearted friendship after they provided Lilith with information about the fae. They have an appreciation for each other's knowledge, and can often be found spending time together while Jehan is working in the library of the Lanthorne Estate.◈VALERIAN
(@LILITHIIAN)
Valerian and J have a special relationship. They’re friends in a very loose sense of the word, but J treasures him as one of their closest. They feed off of each other on occasion, and most of their interactions are filled with flirtatious banter. They’re really rather close due to the blood-sharing, or at least J thinks so. He’s seen some of the barest parts of them, so they really do value him and his opinion a fair bit.◈THEO
(@GXNPOWDCR)
Despite shooting them one time, Theo is the other half of J’s two best friends. They seem to look directly past the atrocities she’s committed, and they treasure her for her excitability (and her hugs). They never fail to get as excited as a puppy whenever they see her, and they’re a rather affectionate pair. Jehan would move heaven and Earth for her, and they’re sure she’d do the same.◈MEDUSA
(@GLASSF0UNDATI0N)
Medusa is one of J's nearest and dearest companions. She has been at their side since they began working at the Foundation years ago. Though they were indignant at first, insisting they didn't need a bodyguard, they have since come to appreciate her presence and often feel uncomfortable when they're not with her. They have only grown closer since the Foundation was leveled by Altera Corp and more than half their ranks, along with Dr. Schneider, disappeared. They held on tight to her, and they do not intend to let go. They're fiercely defensive of her, and the love they hold for her is some of the strongest they've felt.

modern day

Jehan assisted in instructing a group of 20 children at the Glass Foundation, run by their lover Elizabeth Schneider. With their dogs, Tink and Pistachio, they stayed on foundation grounds Monday-Friday, opening Remedy in the evenings. They stayed at their home in the north on the weekends. As of the present day, Jehan is now an "Asset Caretaker" for the Glass Foundation. The main site was destroyed by Altera, and they have migrated to a different site to recuperate. They care for the Glasjagers as well as a secret project for Elizabeth Schneider. When they're not on Foundation grounds, Jehan works part-time as the Lanthorne family's librarian.
